Dogs bring so much comfort, and company.
I appreciate Hamish especially when Anthony is away with work.  But obviously it’s not the same as meeting with friends, family and the church.

This time of year is very hard for a lot of people and for different reasons.  Some are on their own, or have experienced loss, or family problems, or maybe it brings it home that so much is wrong or empty in their life.

So amid the hectic schedule take time out this Christmas, to think if there is someone you could invite over to join in with your family for a meal and some company.

Is there a neighbour who lives alone, a single parent, widow, elderly person, or student you know?
Or it might be a family who has just moved into the area, or someone who is going through a hard time.
You don’t have to do anything special, just an extra setting at the table and a welcoming heart.
Just doing that can mean so much.  And it’s an excellent opportunity to share the gospel with them.

Growing up, I remember on New Year’s Day, my parents would have 1 or 2 elderly people who lived alone, over for the day and they loved and appreciated it so much.  In Scotland, New Year is a big celebration, so it was another feast.  Our home was already full with extended family staying but there always seemed to be room for them.

Or are you on your own, feeling like an outsider?
I know in previous churches I have been to, that different people started things and it turned into a group tradition.  If you are a single parent reach out to other single parents or older people.  The widow or older person may appreciate being involved with a family and you can receive help.

Or put up on your church notice board an idea for a get together, so you can meet more people.   If you can’t have people over for dinner, then arrange to either do an activity or go somewhere.
You may be surprised to find out how many people who also will be on their own or just feel lonely.

And always remember Jesus sent the Holy Spirit as our comforter. “And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Matthew 28:20.  So however lonely you may feel, if you are a believer God is always with you.

Which lonely person has God put in your life so you can have them part of your family?

Psalm 68:6 “God places the lonely in families”
